It’s once again time for the Friends of the Buda Library Summer Contest for Young Writers.  We want to give our young library patrons an opportunity to flex their writing muscles and show off their imaginations and literary skills. The contest is open to all writers between the ages of 8 to 17.

There will be two age divisions: Child: ages 8 - 12 and Youth: ages 13 - 17.

Each entrant will submit a story of 500 words or less. There will be only one entry per person.  The prompt will not be included in the 500 word count, but must be included in the story.  First place winning entries in both divisions will be awarded $100 by the Friends of the Buda Library and published in the Hays Free Press.

This year’s prompts:

8-12 Age Group:  The sign said not to push the button, but I did.

13-17 Age Group:  The envelope looked as though it had been in the mailbox for years.  The writing was faded.

Write a story relating to the prompt that shares your ideas and your creativity.  Entries will be judged based on the quality of the writing, originality and subject matter.  Finalists will be judged by local writers, teachers, and librarians.

Entry Deadline: Stories must be received before the library closes on Thursday, July 12, 2018.  No email submission will be accepted.

Winner Announcements: All prize winners will be announced on the Friends of the Buda Library and Buda Public Library websites. Winners will be individually notified.

Awards: The Friends of the Buda Library will award $100 for the first place stories, $50 for the second place, and $25 for the third place in both divisions. The first place stories will be published on the Hays Free Press website and the Friends of the Buda Library website.

Awards Presentation: All entrants are invited to the library’s summer reading program celebration on August 10th and 11th where certificates and awards will be presented.
