    A Message from our President...

Friends and fellow supporters of the Buda Public Library:

In this last quarter of 2021, I am relieved that so many daily and leisure activities are showing some return to normalcy post COVID constraints, although the new normal may require health precautions for years to come.

It is this time of year that we celebrate library supporters with National Friends of Libraries Week.  Kudos to you as a member of Friends of the Buda Library! As you know, the money we raise through memberships, donations, and book sales benefit and enhance the variety of programs and services provided by our library.  Even though face-to-face events have been limited in the past 18 months, we continue to raise money for the library.  This is a time of year that many membership renewals come due. I encourage you to renew your membership.  The library keeps working for us, and we want to keep working for it.

In the past year, we have received many donations of used books.  If you wish to donate used books, they can now be dropped off at the library.  Additionally, our Friends group of ready volunteers can arrange to receive large donations at our book storage unit.  Email us with such requests.  All contact information, as well as updates regarding activities, memberships, and donations, are maintained on our website.

Many of you eagerly await our annual book sale that is historically held in December. Unfortunately, it was cancelled last year due to COVID restrictions. Restrictions have eased this year, but many of our members and volunteers, as well as potential customers, continue to avoid crowds and non-masked persons.  Because we are uncertain about the unsteady COVID trends, our Friends of the Buda Library board has decided to postpone the annual sale until Spring 2022.  At that time, we feel optimistic that we can operate the huge event with enough volunteers and customers necessary to make it successful.  Planning had started for a 2021 sale, but too many critical details were having to remain “on hold” as we watched community trends related to COVID infections. The good news is that the sale is not cancelled, just postponed.  We will provide additional updates on our website.

In the meantime, we are keeping the sales shelves in the library stocked with a variety of used books.  Don’t forget to stop and shop there.  There is always a great selection at very low prices. When our sales shelves are updated, we also post a picture on our website and Facebook so you can get a glimpse of the current offerings.

Thank you for being a Friend,

    Joan Givens, President

    Friends of the Buda Library

Friends of the Buda Library President, Joan Givens, and Secretary Carla Woodworth attended the now-resumed monthly Chamber of Commerce luncheon. June’s guest speaker was State Representative Erin Zwiener, who summarized the just-ended Texas Legislative Session. Zwiener is shown here with Givens and Woodworth.

Currently with COVID19 restrictions in place we are limited to virtual board meetings.  We have participated in only a few library activities during the past year in order to support their virtual programs.

In general, there are various ways for Friends of the Buda Library to volunteer their time and talents.

    • Friends help with some public events at the request of the library.
    • Friends organize book sales during the year.  The biggest of these is the annual book sale that occurs the first weekend in December.
    • Friends can join one of our committees -
      •  helping to organize EVENTS
      •  helping to plan FUNDRAISING activities
      •  helping to manage the BOOKS that are donated.

Volunteers should be members of the Friends of the Buda Library, and be at least 18 years of age.  There are no requirements related to how much or how little one must volunteer.

Volunteer opportunities are announced to members through emails.

When face-to-face meetings can resume, most committees meet on a regular basis or as needed, depending on projects being addressed.  Each committee has a designated chairperson to facilitate meetings.

During the week of April 4-10 we celebrated National Library Week.  The Friends of the Buda Library gave a gift to all of our librarians (Melinda, Caitlin, Martha, Angie, Amy, Jennifer, Heather, Yalimar, Savannah and Pamela) to let them know how much we appreciate their service to our community.

Thank you to everyone that dropped off book donations at the Buda Library on Saturday.  Friends will be sorting and organizing for a few months to get them ready for our annual book sale.  The date is not set but will be announced as soon as CDC guidance allows us to hold this event.  Most likely it will be packed with mask wearing and social distancing but we will be glad to finally be able to get back to business.

The Buda Lions have been a part of the community since 1975.  The club is chartered through Lions Club International, which is the world's largest service organization.  When asked who or what are the Lions: "we make as much money as we possibly can to give back first, to the community and second, to people all over the world.

Thanks goes to the Lions for once again supporting the "Friends" and contributing to our ongoing fundraisers to provide programs, supplies and media of all sorts to the Buda Library.
